2 things:
1 - In countries where consumers have excessive buying power (Like the USA), both are readily used and abused.
2 - In half developed countries (Portugal, Greece, Thailand, etc), they invariably try to copy these actions.... kinda like wannabes.
Both lead to a LOT of profit for higher up people...
