A Wave of Untranslatables here (to English, mostly) from Speakr.

Speakr's blog .   The Portuguese have "saudade" — a bittersweet longing for something absent, possibly forever. Not nostalgia, not homesickness, not grief — something in between that English simply cannot name. The Danes have "hygge" — a feeling of cozy contentment that "cozy" doesn't begin to capture. The Japanese have "wabi-sabi" — finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. The Germans have "Kummerspeck" — literally "grief bacon," the weight you gain from emotional overeating. And Easter Islanders have "tingo" — the act of borrowing things from a friend's house, one by one, until there's nothing left. Every language contains words that exist nowhere else — emotional concepts so culturally specific that translation requires not a word, but a paragraph. 🧩❤️ This isn't trivia — it's the daily reality of professional translators. When a Portuguese novel builds its entire emot...

(Post IV) Still about the untranslatables (to English, mostly).

CIOL ran a members poll about their favourite ‘untranslatable words’.   Aside from the usual Saudade, I favour the following.   Caruma; - a collective term used to refer to the leaves (needles) of pine trees after they have dried and fallen to the ground; pine needles. - the husk surrounding immature chestnuts. Maresia: - air laden with seawater droplets (and its characteristic scent), which spreads along coastal areas, especially at low tide. - the oxidizing effect of this air. - gentle wave motion; swell. And we don't use Sobremesa the same way Spanish does, it means "dessert" and that's good enough.                                   Many shades of longing If one theme dominated the responses, it was longing. English gives us words such as nostalgia , yearning and homesickness , but other languages have their own rich and distinctive emotional palettes. One suggestion was the Portugues...

(Post III) The so-called Untranslatables (to English, mostly). EN + PT

Imagem
Let's check these many illustrated by Anjana Iyer , for the Found in Translation project.  Backpfeifengesicht – DE – A face badly in need of a fist. Iktsuarpok – Inuit – The frustration of waiting for someone to turn up. (We have seen this one before, but with another translation: “The sense of anticipation as you wait for someone to visit.”) Tingo – Pascuense / Rapa Nui – To gradually steal all the possessions out of a neighbour's house by borrowing and not returning. (We have seen this one before, but with another translation: “The act of taking objects one desires from the house of a friend by gradually borrowing all of them.”) Ilunga (Tshiluba) – A person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time. Hanyauku – KWN – The act of walking on tiptoes across warm sand. (E...

(Post II) The so-called Untranslatables (to English, mostly)

Let's check a few more – illustrated by Emma Block , who did an art retreat in Monsaraz. 🇵🇹  Flechazo – ES – An arrow shot love at first sight. Iktsuarpok – Inuit – The sense of anticipation as you wait for someone to visit. Merak – SR – A sense of oneness with the universe derived from the simplest of pleasures. Firgun – HE – The simple, unselfish joy that something good has happened to someone else. (The opposite of Schadenfreude!) Oodal – TA – The fake anger lovers display after a tiff. Dor – RO – The sense of longing when separated from that which you love. (tantamount to PT Saudade; «Dor» means Ache or Pain in PT) Aay’han – Mandalorian – A bittersweet moment of mourning & joy. Manabamáte – Rapa Nui – The lack of appetite you suffer when falling in love.
